Is the Flight Attendant Career for you?
Is FA career for you?
Is the flight attendant career for you? This is not tips but rather a perspective to be a flight attendant and if its really for you. It’s better to have ideas beforehand of your application, rather than to realize everything after.
- People Skills or “Pakikisama”
Pakikisama is number 1 because being a flight attendant, you work with new people every single day. It would not be of the same crew every flight, it differs from one flight to another. Also, you have to greet every passenger and be friendly. If you were of the type of person not liking to smile to strangers then you will have a difficulty in dealing with new set of passengers. As a flight attendant, it’s part of your job. Nevertheless, introverts are able to cope up but others might be of an advantage of them. Another point for it is when a passenger encounter a certain problem, you have to use customer service skills to deal and to resolve the concern. That tags of being ma-pr, ma-karinyoso, and magaling makisama are great potential of having 70% less of a problem in a flight. With that, it just natural for you to be that malambing.

- Customer Service
Customer service is a big part of a flight attendant’s job - day in, day out. From the moment when passengers come in to the aircraft, you have to deliver customer service ‘til the last person to come out. There’s no room for attitudes of being bitchy, moody, or argumentative to any passenger. So being good to customer service will mean flight attendant career is for you.
- Physically Fit
You have to be physically fit. The flight attendant career is very, very demanding. Sometimes you lose sleep because shift changes. Onetime you work in the morning then at night. With that, you’re immune system might suffer especially for those anemic or just really have weak bodies. It’s either you will give up or your body. But it doesn’t require you to be fat or be an athlete, instead you have to just be physically fit to cope up with that fast-changing lifestyle. However, being an active athlete before in school is an advantage and maintains it by going to gyms and doing outdoor activities. Having that one’s solid, strong, and healthy body will make it easier for you in that sleep changing patterns, better immune system, and to adjust whatever the situation is. Cases of being not physically fit resulted to unsuccessful careers as a flight attendant.
- Independent Person
Also, flight attendant career is for you if you’re an independent person. No fix schedules, no 8am-5pm, no holidays, no weekends - indeed no social life even though the work is very social. Once assigned overseas, your flatmate is on duty and it’s your off. You have to do errands on your own like laundry, groceries, bank stuffs, and some me-time perhaps to watch a movie. Also, most of your close friends will not be available for a catch-up when you’re free. On a positive note, you can find ways to maximize your day off and independent people can enjoy its perks. Some may have problems on loneliness factor but you have to build a life outside work as much as possible.
- Night Shift
Can you do night shift? Being a flight attendant, you cannot choose your schedule but rather follow the flight schedule given to you. Some may really have difficulty especially for those who are morning person but for nocturnal ones this is just alright. Sleep is the usual problem and after a month or two you and your body can adjust. Melatonin supplement can somehow help with calm, peaceful dark surroundings when you sleep at daytime to fully recharge and have enough energy to do another night duty. This thing could be a struggle but if you’re fine on this challenge to do either day or night duty, then being a flight attendant career is for you.
A flight attendant must have the people skills of “pakikisama,” good customer service, physically fit, independent person, and can adjust to night shift duties. If you all have these attributes then a flight attendant career is for you.
